ABOUT MARY JELKS, OWNER & CEO
Mary Jelks founded Jelks Disability Consulting after a long career inside the Social Security Administration. She is a member of the National Association of Disability Representatives. As an expert in the complex disability appeals process, she uses her experience to help clients get the decisions they need to support themselves and their families.
Imagine the security you would feel if the person preparing your tax return had been an IRS auditor or processor for most of their career. Those struggling with the financial implications of no longer being able to work desperately need that kind of informed support.
While she can’t guarantee success for every client, Mary is driven to help her clients succeed because she only gets paid when they do.
All fees collected by Jelks Disability Services are paid from past-due benefits, only after clients get their final favorable decisions.
MARY’S STORY
“After graduating from college, I was fortunate to find a job that would allow me to give back to society or at least help people when they were going through some kind of transition in life. That job was with SSA.
“My first position with Social Security was as Claims Representative in Orlando, Florida and later in Atlanta, Georgia. As I sought additional career opportunities, I was promoted to work with SSA’s Appeals Council located in the Washington, DC area. I worked in various positions: Hearings & Appeals Analyst, Civil Actions Analyst, and Program Analyst. While working, I went back to school and earned a paralegal certificate from George Washington University and a Master of Science Degree from the University of Maryland University College.
“Branch Manager was my final position with the Appeals Council. In that position, I managed a team of approximately 26 employees working with the Appeals Council in the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review until I retired.
“A few years after retiring, I decided to use my knowledge and experience inside SSA to assist the claimants on the outside who file for benefits and have difficulty understanding the Social Security disability process. Therefore, I applied and met the qualifications to be certified by SSA as a non-attorney advocate eligible for direct pay (EDPNA). In this capacity, I represent individuals who are appealing claims before SSA at all levels of the administrative process, leveraging my many years of SSA experience to help my clients”.
